De4ths in Russ14, So Saddening to Me

I have been thinking of R4ssian men d41ng by the thousands, and all the generations that have been lost to the terrible war in Ukr41ne.

As of early 2026, multiple analyses, including reports from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimate that

1.2 million R4ssians have been - kill3d, wounded or missing;
325,000 may have been k1ll3d. The average age of R4ssian soldi3rs kill3d in Ukr41ne has risen significantly, from roughly 21–30 years old in early 2022 to approximately 38–40+ years old by late 2024. In 2025, the average age of volunteers and mobilized tr00ps k1ll3d has pushed higher, with some categories reaching 42–52 years.

Findings by the BBC (in a Feb 2026 article) show that the average age of a k1ll3d merc3naries is now 43, with many being sent into high-intensity ass4ult operations just three to five days after signing their contracts.

Analysts point out that residents of small towns and impoverished villages are most likely to sign contracts due to the lack of stable employment and the slowing of the R4ssian econ0my. This has created a vast disparity in the “visibility” of the w4r; in regions like Tuva and Buryatia, the de4th rate per capita is up to 33 times higher than in M0sc0w.

UK Defense Secretary John Healey said R4ssia is losing more troops than it can replace and is increasingly recruiting foreigners, including citizens of Indi4, P4kistan, Nep4l, Cub4, Nigeri4, and Seneg4l, according to Bloomberg on February 16. He added that about 17,000 North Kore4n troops are currently fighting alongside Russi4n forces.

500K to 600K Ukr4ini4ns have been kill3d, wounded or are missing.
100,000 to 140,000 may have di3d.

In other studies...
72,000 have died in G4z4 since October 2023, and it's estimated that over 1000 have starved.

What is Intuitive Eating?

I have been an emotional eater for many years, and I gained 30 pounds in the last 4 years. I just finished a 6-week group discussion series on Intuitive Eating while we read about the 10 principles in the book by by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. I was a bit triggered in the beginning when they encouraged us to eat anything we wanted, whenever we wanted. But then we went into the value of being kind to ourselves in all the ways that means including eating what you actually are craving. Then we learned to check in with our bodies a lot more, notice hunger in the moment and honor the hunger with food. I realized I was restricting in the mornings and didn't even realize it. So I added breakfast to my day. I began to tune in to my body more and what it needed in general. I began moving more. Slowly I eventually have reduced my emotional eating. It is easier for me to stop after eating 6 candy corn. I live with my mother, and she NEEDS her sweets, so here they are. My aim is to keep checking in with my body, and do no harsh self-talk. If I eat too much and feel physically bad from over eating, I know it's just a moment and doesn't define anything about me.

So Intuitive Eating starts with a radical disposing of any diet culture or restrictive eating thoughts for the purpose of losing weight. The research shows that as we restrict calories, porrtions, food classes, food types, we subconsciously send messages that we have scarcity, and we will overeat in someway at some point. So while we are in the first phase of abandoning all weight loss strategies or desires for a different body, we learn to NOTICE hints of hunger and honor them right away. Then we start noticing how our body feels before during and after eating. This is the interoception. Then we start noticing when we want to eat when not hungry. How is the body feeling? What are the emotions? We start speaking to ourselves internally with kindness. We empathize for our needs around food hat might be comfort, company, the security of fullness, etc. Other strategies for healty relationship with food involve making nice-looking food, and eating without distraction. And to do mindful eating. Noticing tastes, visuals, sensations of having eaten in our body. Checking for satisfaction (did we enjoy it?). Checking for fullness. Learn ways to soothe yourself. Have healthy self-talk about your body. Appreciate all it does for you! And move. Move your body to feel good, not to burn calories. Take a beatuful walk in nature. Stretch to feel the relief in the muscles. Dance if that's what feels good! And then the LAST thing to attend to in Intuitive Eating is "gentle nutrition." It is a winding road, not a straight one, but requires kind self-attention.

So far, I feel more self-caring, with less hankering for snacking and feeling full. At night, I snack a bit, and sometimes have too much at a meal. But I am noticing changes toward myself that feel very good!

Maine Magic @ Madeleine Point

One evening when visiting my friend Beth Ashley in Yarmouth, Maine, we went to this place near sunset time... there was a bench looking over this little place that had a tiny beach of flat dark gray rocks, a big rock that a couple was sitting on, a short dock out after a bridge with two 16 year old boys in swimsuits, talking, diving in the water.

1st Two Boys of Eternal Summer: we sat on the bench and just enjoyed the view... the beach, rock, water, dock, boats, sun reflecting... watching the boys talking and playing in the water... we had planned to go to the dock, but I didn’t want to disturb them just yet... I enjoyed their eternal-kind-of-summer silhouettes, 2 boys bonded in age and experience of the special summer in this special place.

2nd, Big Rock: we noticed the couple on the big rock... hanging out with some drinks and towels, watching the sunset... this is a place people come to watch the sunset...

3rd,All Perfect Rocks: we walked down to the beachy area after they left, and checked out the big rock... then I sat on the beach made of little flat dark gray rocks.... all the same! I started skipping rocks. Beth was amazed! I skipped more rocks, and Beth was so impressed! Some were skipping 12 times or more. I said every rock on this beach is a perfect skipping rock! She wondered where the couple went... the towels were left there... A house was nearby, and we thought what a wonderful summer they had signed up for.

4th, The Monthly Swimmer: a young man about 17 came onto the little beach and took his shorts off to get into the water. Friendly Beth made a comment about the water. The two boys were still hanging out on the dock chatting a lot and swimming once in a while for 20 seconds at a time. The water was cold. We found out this young man had made a commitment last summer to enter the water at least one time a month regardless of the temperature. Beth learned that he had indeed succeeded at his quest. We were impressed. He swam easily, slowly out, got near the dock and the boys recognized him. Nice hellos.... he returned. More chatting. I said don’t wait a month for your next swim! Oh no, I won’t. So cute, people are....

6th, The European Dog Lady: I headed toward the bridgewalk that would go to the dock. Beth saw a woman approaching that had a little dog, and she was going to talk to her first... I went on to see down into the water from the bridgewalk. Two pre-teen girls were looking down near the rocks, seeing a crab. I searched for a crab.... just gorgeous seaweed in the clear water. Beth was enjoying a chat with the woman who was not American. She could tell because the woman was not so open to chatting right away as most Americans would be around here, haha, but of course she warmed up to Beth, whose heart is so open to connection and finding common joy with others.

7th, The Jumping Boy: A boy was climbing over the railing to do a jump. His mom was below swimming in the water. She was encouraging him. Beth snapped 2 pictures as he released his hold. She was excited about the great picture she took, and yelled down to the mom that she needed her digits to text her these photos. The mom, swimming along thanked her and yelled her cell phone # back. Beth texted them to her, exclaiming that they were such great pictures. A few minutes later, the woman having gotten out of the water and reached her phone was praising the photos and thanking Beth with smiles. Beth's enthusiasm for a mom to get the moment of her son was returned.

8th, The Lobster Catch: We were on the dock, finally, and I heard the chugging sound of a lobster boat... the sound was getting closer. I said, “Beth, I think the lobster boat is coming here!” I was excited to see working lobster boat people and their catch, perhaps. A couple of young men had come to the dock with fishing gear, poles and tackle boxes. The lobster boat did swing up beside the dock. I spotted someone transferring live lobsters from the hold to a crate! A man about 40 years old and two teens were the crew. I asked Beth, “Do you think he would sell us a lobster?!” “I can ask him.” So she went over and asked... He said, “sure” and then hemmed and hawed about the price... “How about $7?” Wow that is cheap, I thought, so offered, “Would you take $15 for 2?” I smiled... I said, “I am bargaining up,” I offered, glancing with a smile towards the 2 fishing boys who were a few feet away enjoying this exchange with their own smiles. The Lobsterman handed Beth 2 lobsters that were 1.5 to 2 pounds each. Beth held them up as the trophies they were, with her life-winning smile with the sun setting behind, and the lobsterfolk continuing their travail... We each carried our lethargic lobsters back to teh car, and tossed them into the hatch. We went back to her house, and heated up a big pot of boiling water to cook one at a time... She was willing to do the dunking. I had a change of heart, sad to be killing them personally! She insisted I eat the first one as soon as it was done, so I ate it with melted butter after she shelled it for me!

Kintsugi

Kintsugi is a way of mending broken pottery in Japan with lacquer dusted with gold or silver powder. It is recognizing, allowing, acknowledging and celebrating a crack or what might be seen as a flaw, but is an imperfection that joins all humanity... we are all imperfect which is part of what MAKES us human. I believe we are in this human life to grow and expand which requires some kinks along the way, and maybe even some suffering... so our suffering can be purposeful, which is encouraging and reminds me to be with suffering so that it is not wasted. It contributes to my heart's expansion and compassion.

One nice excerpt from this article:

Today, extremely strong and barely visible epoxies and other repair compounds exist – but none add value to the pottery the way kintsugi does. If the perfect repair is done and the pottery looks as good as new. That is well and good, but it is also no better than a brand new mass produced item.

Again, same for humans. With age comes experience. With failures comes wisdom. Instead of hankering for a clean slate, forever wishing to take back one’s old mistakes, grasping for something different, we should instead highlight ourselves, flaws and all in large bold gold letters and become more beautiful for it.

In doing so, by practicing the philosophy that kintsugi so perfectly encapsulates, we find that ourselves and our lives suffice and is innately wonderful.

Helping Asian Elephants with Kinetic Sculpture Bike

In 2015, when living in Gainesville, Florida, I was "between jobs" and volunteered for CIFAE which was a local nonprofit dedicated to conserving Asian Elephants. We were preparing to host an elephant march in Gainesville, and I knew of a talented artist cyclist who made moving sculptures with bike underpinnings. Raymond Rawls was known in town for creating imaginative kinetic sculptures on bikes, and having them in the local parades. He is an amazing designer, so I approached him about making a kinetic elephant sculpture and he was up for it!

So in May 2015, I created a FaceBook page to track the progress and implementation of the kinetic sculpture to benefit Asian Elephant conservation efforts. Here are some posts and media from the page which has been deleted due to lack of use by the folks of CIFAE after I was no longer volunteering there.

I went to Raymond's studio in a garage where he had all his raw materials, and he showed his initial concept to me and Ron Chandler, the CIFAE president:

Raymond is a serious sculptor and studies his subject in detail to create a realistic portrayal.

Raymond is very community oriented. He recruited local folks to come paste paper on the skeleton after he got her formed, and provided pizza to everyone!

"Raymond Rawls' photo from today! He is finishing up the cardboard shaping of the elephant bike for CIFAE (Conservation Initiative for the Asian Elephant). The next step is papering. They will be working on that on Saturday, August 29th, 2015 (5-8pm) at 210 NW 10th Ave. Volunteers are welcome to stop by to help. (includes refreshments and pizzas!)."

After it was finished it would be revealed at the CIFAE Gala event in downtown Gainesville!

"Save the date for Sept 12, 2015 fundraiser with amazing Indian arts, music and food at The Wooly, to raise awareness of the lives and challenges of Asian Elephants. Activities for kids! See the almost finished Elephant Sculpture Bike. See event and get your advance tickets here to raise funds for Conservation Initiative for the Asian Elephant!

Look how she walks! She is almost finished! She rides like an elephant, and has a bendy trunk, and moving legs!

I designed this flyer and helped organize the first gala:

Here she was, finished before the public reveal, with Jacob gleefully touring her wonder.

Here is another angle of the beautiful girl.
"She's finished. Thank you Lorraine Duerden for the great work on the eyes!"

In October, she was part of the global Elephant March being in the local event in Gainesville.

And she rolled in the November 2015 Homecoming parade!

In 2017 they had their 3rd annual march!

Sustainable homes for connection and responsibility

I am reflecting on how our newer homes generate more propensity to be indoors and more use of resources.

As we get more technology, we get further away from each other, we get further away from how the natural world really works... we get more insulated in the suburban homes with small lawns and ornamental trees and a few topiary bushes... and 2-car garage and double pane windows on a very large house with 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms and a tv in most rooms.

As we get more comfortable, we occupy more indoor space, and have less interest to interact with outdoor space. I lived in Venezuela for 10 years, traveled to Ecuador and Costa Rica, India... people live partially outside there when they are doing things we normally think of as indoor activities. It's healthy, it's spacious, it's connecting for people to their environment and community.

In the USA, people spend 90% of their time indoors. I want a home that helps me be outdoors while being 'at home.' Check out these terraces, patios.

and for lower budgets...

homes in Costa Rica

As we get more technology, we get further away from each other, we get further away from how the natural world really works... we get more insulated in the suburban homes with small lawns and ornamental trees and a few topiary bushes... and 2-car garage and double pane windows on a very large house with 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms and a tv in most rooms.

And we must move to reducing carbon in our own homes, businesses and cars, not waiting for industry and government to take care of everything, centrally. I drive down I75 and see oceans of solar panels. We need these distributed to each of our homes and businesses for true sustainability, for wildlife, for space, for our sense of contribution/empowerment, for closer/efficient electric, and relationship to our environment.

These solar farms make sense on paper, but don't make sense on the land.
According to Green Power EMC's website, the vast majority of the electric membership corporation's 503-MW generation portfolio — 93% — is made up of solar power resources. Green Power EMC President Jeff Pratt in a statement noted that the project will "help power more than 11,000 EMC households." See story.

How are birds, animals and plants going to survive these solar farms? Is pasture with cows more sustainable than these monocultures of metal and glass? Are these unsustainable solutions for sustainability? I support distributed solutions, not huge engineered central solutions.

More and more, we get more comfortable as the needs of the earth get more dire. There is less land, less air, less water, fewer corridors for earth's beings to just live.

I have hope in the new generations, and the new administration, and I plan to help plant trees, and live in a more connected way.

Honoring Land Ancestors, The Osage

Today, walking in Overland I noticed a sign that mentioned an old Indian burial ground... I wandered behind a church and said a prayer on the grassy slope there... honoring ancestors. I decided to research the native American, indigenous people of the st Louis area...

The largest and most powerful tribe was the Osage.

Here we see an Osage warrior.

"The men are tall and perfectly proportioned. They have at the same time all the physical qualities which denote skill and strength combined with graceful movements. . . .

by Charles Evret de Saint-Me

". . . their ear[lobe]s, slit by knives, grow to be enormous, and they hang low under the weight of the ornaments with which they are laden. There is a complete lack of beard and eyebrows on their faces, for they carefully pull out the little hair which happens to grow there.

"Their calm, dignified faces show great shrewdness; there is something soldierly and serious about the expression. Their hair is black and thick. The Osage shave their heads, except for the top, from which two strands of hair branch off and grow straight back to the occiput, where they form a tuft which falls to the lower part of the neck; between these strands grow two braids, the beauty of which consists in their length. . . .

"The [Osage Indians] seldom go out without painting themselves; the colors they use are, first, vermillion, then verdigris [greenish-blue], and then yellow, which they buy from the trader; lacking these, they use ochre, chalk, or even mud.

"The Osage always paint red that part of their head around their hair, the eye-sockets, and their ears; these are the national colors, the war-time paint. The other colors, indifferently put on the other parts of their bodies, depend upon their individual fancy."

-Victor Tixier, physician, 1839

I am moved by the discipline, ritual and self respect that comes through these images and writings.  I long for the days when tribal earth- and ancestral-honoring traditions connected people to each other, the past and the land. I long for a deep sense of respect for oneself and for the land as a way of life that is shared in community.

On Cancelling People

When Amy Cooper was videoed in Central Park saying to Chris Cooper, "I'm going to tell them I am being threatened by a black man," I kept wondering, WHAT did he say to her that triggered this reaction? I finally learned it today when I went searching the internet. In the statement from Amy, she says, "When Chris began offering treats to my dog and confronted me in an area where there was no one else nearby and said, 'You're not going to like what I'm going to do next,' I assumed we were being threatened when all he had intended to do was record our encounter on his phone."
Here is the summary that was reported over and over in the media: "A Black man asked a white woman to leash her dog in Central Park, as rules required. She refused. Then she called the police to say she was being threatened." And regarding the moments before filming began, "After he asked her to leash the cocker spaniel, the two exchanged words."
After that we got to hear in detail all that she said on the emergency call. (I assume everyone reading this has watched that video, and maybe some interviews with Chris Cooper.) She had assumed that what he was "going to do next" would be physically harmful to her because he was a black man? And she chose to use her whiteness to threaten him without bothering to communicate with him, human to human.

But I was like, "Well WHAT did he say to her?" Not that it would erase the racism that was plain to see, but why was this not in the news report? In an effort to remain connected to our common humanity I felt we deserved to know the whole story and when I learned what he said (according to her), I gained a glimpse of what could have put her into the fear response, albeit a racist one.
She has lost her job, home and reputation and seems to have become a pariah.

I heard a journalist yesterday say that we have a "cancel-society." We cancel people, kind of like a Black Mirror episode. Kevin Spacey, for example has been "canceled." Are we going to demonize and erase people to the extent they cannot actually be in society any longer? I want us to have regenerative processes for healing and learning in our society. I want us to stop throwing people away on one hand while we do the good work for justice and fairness on the other.

True nonviolent communication calls us to heal together, not put a distance with those that are harming and needing to grow... from what I read, she sounds open to growing.
I celebrate that Chris Cooper himself is open to forgiveness and reconnecting; in another article: "Asked if he’d accept her apology, Christian Cooper told CNN he would 'if it’s genuine and if she plans on keeping her dog on a leash in the Ramble going forward.'"
Excerpts from news article found here.

My wounded child and the careening bus she sometimes drives

A week ago I returned from a retreat in Evia, Greece: Embodied Trauma Healing, led by Ralf Marzen who has studied with Laurence Heller who "wrote the book" on developmental trauma.

The one-week experience helped shine a light on the shapes of how my childhood trauma is still expressing itself in my adult life on large and small subtle planes. Whereas before, the effects seemed foggy, vague, I came from the retreat with more awareness and clarity, and last week a big trauma vortex materialized upon my return home.

It is incredible how much pain can come up from a past trauma when triggered by a current situation... was trying to grapple with what happened in my past that creates such an "illogical" reaction right now.... feeling the pain of opening up vulnerably to someone and feeling abandoned by them, even if they're not really abandoning me at all.

The only thing I can surmise is that when I was 3, my father had a bad car accident and left the country with my mother to recover in a New York hospital for 4 to 6 months. When he returned his personality was different and he was a little bit out of it, very disconnected from me. This traumatic experience was never processed so it was never completed because as a three-year-old I didn't have any language and the wisdom of the day was to pretend like nothing happened and everything is normal, to "protect" us children from emotions related to upsetting events. So even though it was a very upsetting event for the adults in the family, their approach was to not talk about it and stuff emotions and not explain or empathize with the four children who were surely freaking out on many levels, or just shutting down.

I have no direct memory of my three year old's experience, but last week while bending over with grief and intense crying in the kitchen, I did start to connect somewhere deep inside to the desperation of annihilation that my small child actually experienced, and that awareness made me cry so much harder feeling empathy for the little one who was completely abandoned and was completely empty and meaningless without her parents. I connected to awareness that the wound was never treated by her trusted caregivers.

Certain relationships today trigger that trauma experience of losing contact with my father.... So when a capable attractive man shows a special interest in me, even as a friend, and we connect vulnerably, I get drawn in and when we part, it can be very upsetting/triggering the childhood pain again. The more vulnerably I share with that person, the more deep into the wound our connection penetrates, and so when the connection ends (we both traveled home and went back to our lives after the one week in the retreat in this iteration, there have been many!) it's like the wound has been re-opened, and pus is flowing and the pain body is totally awakened.

So how can I complete the cycle of my 3 year old self losing her Dad's attention so I can safely share with people without feeling attached or abandoned?

I proceeded through flight, then freeze then fight responses as I went in and out of the trauma vortex over the course of 2.5 days. Thoughts of dying, going into the hospital, being in a tribal community with 20 people holding me in love and being a lover-partner to this guy were all fantasies I had. Then I popped out of the deep level of pain to a functioning place of going to the store with my faculties and language intact without wanting to fall back into despair... I had to function to deliver a workshop in a few days.

I called in my closest women friends as loving resource. I also spoke to this wonderful man and I criticized him for something he did the week before, and it was the weirdest thing to watch myself go there, to this blaming, wounded place again with him. Days later, I was reeling with regret that I let my little wounded child get a hold of the steering wheel of the bus of my life... she was careening through the relationship, banging into his knees. He had a pain response, and withdrew a bit... but has not totally fled. In many past situations when my wounded child would complain or ask for more attention, the man would flee and I would lose the whole connection, exactly my biggest fear.

This is a cruel affliction... grasping to something I want to survive and feel worth being alive, and it evaporates when I get needy. And I am ready to hold it all and take a bigger ownership to heal it.

I realize now how much my little girl has taken the wheel in my relationships with men who tap into the wound as well as with friends and bosses... making them responsible to fulfill some of my needs.

And I can celebrate huge strides I have made in the last 10 years, not taking things so personally in relationships to friends and acquaintances, and creating better boundaries with men who were objects of my source of validation. I have maintained friendships with two of the men who triggered a trauma vortex for me in the last 9 years (but 4 or 5 others failed, being turned off by that child presence) and this feels like a success worth celebrating.

An area for me to focus on is my struggle with self-care and self-love... I struggle with doing nice joyful things for myself like making music, dancing, singing, creating art or poems... I used to do these things when I had steady jobs and rich social connections. I started a path of spiritual and personal growth, and while I have deepened into some close friendships, I have much less social contact not working, and not hanging out at so many events or hosting parties as I used to.

My ultimate goal is to be a full adult in this lifetime who takes care of her inner child(ren)... I think I have a 3 year old and a 10 year old in there that need love and attention.

So what to do now?
  • attend to my own thoughts, feelings, and behavior.
  • pay attention to what I want and need and I ask for support.
  • take care of myself. I move my body and I connect to music.
  • (AKA #resource)
  • be in touch with what is going on right now, including how I feel about it.
  • accept 100 percent responsibility for my own happiness, security, and needs.
  • recognize and celebrate my strengths, while remaining humble about my weaknesses.
  • consciously celebrate my power, my qualities, my unique lovable beauty
  • get therapy with trauma healing counselors

= LOVE MYSELF

While my wounded child can get a little passionate driving the careening bus, she is also happy to sit in the back seat and be cuddled with a safe loving blanket.

America as World Leader Fading with Petrodollar

I have been upset by actions of the new administration and people being appointed, and the agenda it proposes. I realized there is a big story of our influence in the world, and a story about oil that I have never bothered to learn about. So I spent 2 days reading and researching. I cobbled together this story of America's strength with assets that turned into addiction to consumption that is leading swiftly to the fall of the dollar and our economy... here is the history and relevant issues that I explored in chronological order that helps me understand it better.

Bretton Woods: When the Dollar Was Gold

1.   After WWII 730 delegates from 44 allied nations met in Bretton Woods, NH to regulate the international monetary and financial order. The relatively young and economically nimble U.S.A. served as a refreshing replacement to the globe’s former hegemon: a debt-ridden and war-torn Great Britain. The Bretton Woods exchange-rate system had all currencies linked to the US dollar, and the dollar linked to gold. Because the U.S. owned over half the world's official gold reserves—574 million ounces at the end of World War II—the system appeared secure. The US dollar became the “global reserve currency.”  (This is also when the IMF, and what is now known as the World bank and also the WTO got created.)

2. This system was followed by two decades of rapid economic growth but in the end it proved too inflexible.  From 1950 to 1969, as Germany and Japan recovered, the US share of the world's economic output dropped significantly, from 35% to 27%. Furthermore, a negative balance of payments, growing public debt incurred by the Vietnam War, and monetary inflation by the US Federal Reserve caused the dollar to become increasingly overvalued in the 1960s.

3. America was reluctant to adjust its domestic economic policy to maintain the ‘gold peg.’ Despite pressure from foreign nations to protect the dollar's value by reining in excessive government spending, Washington displayed little fiscal constraint and continued to live far beyond its means. It had become obvious to all that America lacked the basic fiscal discipline which could prevent a destruction of its own currency.

4. Many foreign nations, who had previously agreed to a gold-backed dollar as the global reserve currency, were now having serious mixed feelings toward the arrangement. Nations like Britain, France, and Germany determined that a cash-strapped and debt-crazed United States was in no financial shape to be leading the global economy. In France, the Bretton Woods system was called "America's exorbitant privilege" as it resulted in an "asymmetric financial system" where non-US citizens "see themselves supporting American living standards and subsidizing American multinationals."

5. In February 1965 President of France, Charles de Gaulle, announced his intention to exchange its U.S. dollar reserves for gold at the official exchange rate. France and other nations began demanding gold in exchange for their dollars.

The Nixon Shock: Oil for Dollars, the Fiat Currency

6. The USA did not have the gold to cover these dollars, so President Nixon abandoned the link to gold in 1971 as the main part of what was called “the Nixon Shock,” and the fixed exchange-rate system decided at the Bretton Woods Conference disintegrated.  The US dollar no longer represented 1/35th of an ounce of gold. We were officially using fiat money now, instead of commodity money.  “Fiat” is Latin for “let it be.”  The level of the world’s currencies now depended on the amount of trust investors had in that currency. Central banks were allowed to set monetary policy based on their instincts rather than on the need to keep their currency in line with gold.

7. Two years later, in an effort to maintain global demand for U.S. dollars, another system was created called the Petrodollar system. In 1973, a deal was struck between Saudi Arabia and the United States in which every barrel of oil purchased from the Saudis would be denominated in U.S. dollars. Also, the Saudis would be open to investing their surplus oil proceeds in U.S. debt securities.  Under this new arrangement, any country that sought to purchase oil from Saudi Arabia would be required to first exchange their own national currency for U.S. dollars.  In exchange for Saudi Arabia’s willingness to denominate their oil sales exclusively in U.S. dollars, the United States offered weapons and protection of their oil fields from neighboring nations, including Israel.  By 1975, all of the OPEC nations had agreed to price their own oil supplies exclusively in U.S. dollars and to hold their surplus oil proceeds in U.S. government debt securities in exchange for weapons and military protection.

8. This petrodollar system, also known as an “oil for dollars” system, created an immediate artificial demand for U.S. dollars around the globe. And of course, as global oil demand increased, so did the demand for U.S. dollars.
9. In 1996, economist Paul Krugman (Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, 2008) summarized the post-Nixon Shock era as follows:

“The current world monetary system assigns no special role to gold; indeed, the Federal Reserve is not obliged to tie the dollar to anything. It can print as much or as little money as it deems appropriate. There are powerful advantages to such an unconstrained system. Above all, the Fed is free to respond to actual or threatened recessions by pumping in money. To take only one example, that flexibility is the reason the stock market crash of 1987—which started out every bit as frightening as that of 1929—did not cause a slump in the real economy. While a freely floating national money has advantages, however, it also has risks. For one thing, it can create uncertainties for international traders and investors. Over the past five years, the dollar has been worth as much as 120 yen and as little as 80. The costs of this volatility are hard to measure (partly because sophisticated financial markets allow businesses to hedge much of that risk), but they must be significant. Furthermore, a system that leaves monetary managers free to do good also leaves them free to be irresponsible—and, in some countries, they have been quick to take the opportunity.”

10. Freed of any constraints on printing ever more money out of thin air, the United States, through the Federal Reserve, has run the printing presses with impunity (as has the rest of the world), resulting in higher inflation and an even more rapid devaluation of the currency.
11. Many central banks have started buying gold to secure their economies in the long run.

Keeping the Dollar Going as the Oil Currency

12. Libya: Some say that the USA was instrumental in the killing of Muammar al-Gaddafi of Libya by Western-backed rebels because he was proposing a whole system of oil trade and currency using a gold-backed dinar. Through declassified Hillary Clinton emails in early 2016, it was revealed that NATO invaded Libya and killed their king Gaddafi in 2011 to protect the franc valuation in Africa which would have been ruined by a switch of currency to a gold-backed dinar. Libya’s gold was accumulated prior to the current rebellion and was intended to be used to establish a pan-African currency based on the Libyan golden Dinar. This plan was designed to provide the Francophone African Countries with an alternative to the French franc (CFA).   This gold and silver was valued at more than $7 billion.
See http://www.infowars.com/libya-was-invaded-to-prevent-pan-african-currency/

French intelligence officers discovered this plan shortly after the rebellion began, and this was one of the factors that influenced President Nicolas Sarkozy’s decision to commit France to the attack on Libya.

According to more than a few observers, Gaddafi’s plan to quit selling Libyan oil in U.S. dollars — demanding payment instead in gold-backed “dinars”— was the real cause of NATO’s invasion of Libya. The regime, sitting on massive amounts of gold, estimated at close to 150 tons, was also pushing other African and Middle Eastern governments to follow suit. And it literally had the potential to bring down the dollar and the world monetary system by extension, according to analysts. French President Nicolas Sarkozy reportedly went so far as to call Libya a “threat” to the financial security of the world. The “Insiders” were apparently panicking over Gadhafi’s plan.

  • What happened to the gold?
  • Here is video of Wesley Clark talking about plan to invade 7 countries in 5 years. Why are we invading countries? Wolfowitz, Cheney and Rumsfeld did a "policy coup;" want to destabilize the middle east. See https://2012patriot.wordpress.com/2011/11/08/libya-truth-2/
  • Libya had plans for a debt free nation that was literate, clean with a good irrigation system for happy fed people. So the image of the USA and western countries when they bomb Tripoli and the infrastructure of Libya and take their gold.

13. Iraq: In 1999, Iraq broke ranks from trading dollars for oil, and traded with Euro currency. “Sanctions and then a US invasion followed. Coincidence? Hussein’s idea would have strengthened the euro, but Gaddafi’s idea would have strengthened all of Africa in the opinion of hard-money economists.”
See http://www.infowars.com/libya-was-invaded-to-prevent-pan-african-currency/
2003: "There are many things driving President Bush and his administration to invade Iraq, unseat Saddam Hussein and take over the country. But the biggest one is hidden and very, very simple. It is about the currency used to trade oil and consequently, who will dominate the world economically, in the foreseeable future -- the USA or the European Union.  Two years after Iraq started trading oil for euros, alarm bells were sounding; the euro was rising against the dollar, Iraq had given itself a huge economic boon by switching.  Iran started thinking about switching too; Venezuela, the 4th largest oil producer, began looking at it and started cutting out the dollar by bartering oil with several nations including Cuba. The dollar’s grip on oil trading and consequently on world trade in general, was under serious threat. If America did not stamp on this immediately, this economic brushfire could rapidly be fanned into a wildfire capable of consuming the US's economy and its dominance of world trade."
 See https://www.globalpolicy.org/component/content/article/173/30447.html
"Iraq is a European Union beachhead in that confrontation. America had a monopoly on the oil trade, with the US dollar being the fiat currency, but Iraq broke ranks in 1999, started to trade oil in the EU's euros, and profited. If America invades Iraq and takes over, it will hurl the EU and its euro back into the sea and make America's position as the dominant economic power in the world all but impregnable.  If the US is in control of Iraqi supplies, either directly or through a puppet, it would be in a much better position to block any currency shift by the OPEC countries."

14. Other countries are moving away from the petrodollar system including Iran, Syria, Venezuela, India, and North Korea. Additionally, other nations are choosing to use their own currencies for oil like China, Russia, and India, among others. In 2014, India wanted to buy oil from Iran but after sanctions were put on them, feared repercussions from the USA in dealing with Iran. But finally they were able to buy oil for rupees... another sign of movement away from petrodollars.

Petrodollar Decline: China and Russia

15. China overtook the U.S. this year as the top importer of crude oil, and as major producers compete for market share from Chinese buyers, they have been willing to do deals in yuan. Both Russia and Iran are accepting the yuan for oil, as are Angola, Venezuela and Sudan. Others are likely to follow. The growing use of the yuan in oil trading represents the decline of the petrodollar—dollars earned by producers through the sale of petroleum—and also signify China’s growing importance in the world economy. These shifts will have major implications for the geopolitical backdrop, while also providing a boost to the new crude futures exchange. China’s forthcoming launch of a crude futures contract to be traded with the yuan is another major step to cement itself as a global economic powerhouse and challenge the U.S. currency’s dominance in oil markets. While China has a long road to travel if it wishes to unseat the dollar, the Asian juggernaut has taken a number of steps to boost its currency’s standing in the global marketplace, but the move to establish a crude futures exchange is among the most significant.

16. China and Russia have paired up to create the petroyuan. This, after USA and Europe imposed sanctions… but it didn’t work.  The economic sanctions imposed by Washington and Brussels drove the Russians to eliminate the dollar and the euro from their commercial and financial transactions. From mid-2015, the hydrocarbons that China buys from Russia are paid in yuans, not in dollars, information that has been confirmed by high executives of Gazprom Neft, the petroleum branch of Gazprom[5]. This has lead to the use of the “people’s currency” (‘renminbi’) in the world oil market and at the same time allows Russia to neutralize the economic offensive launched by the United States and the European Union. The underpinnings of a new financial order supported by the petroyuan is emerging: the Chinese money is preparing to become the axis of commercial exchanges of the Asian-Pacific region with the principal petroleum powers.

See http://www.globalresearch.ca/the-petro-yuan-versus-dollar-hegemony-china-and-russias-big-bet/5526236

In 2016, Nigeria of OPEC started selling oil in petroyuans. Iran announced they were no longer selling their oil in dollars in the wake of the U.S. removing them from economic sanctions, and would be transacting oil sales using the Euro as their primary currency.

There is general agreement among economists that China’s yuan will eventually rival the U.S. dollar, whether as a secondary reserve currency or at the very top. In fact, a cycling of reserve currency status is the historical norm: Since the 1400s, six different currencies have held the designation as their parent country has ceded status as a global hegemonic power. Beijing’s political will to internationalize its currency will be a key factor in this likely shift.

Russia and China: selling US Treasury debt and Buying Gold

18. According to Treasury Department records, Russia in March 2014 sold off one-third of its U.S. Treasury debt holdings. Russia reduced its U.S. Treasury holdings from $153 billion in March 2013 to $100.4 billion in March 2014. The Russian sell-off of U.S. Treasury debt has been widely interpreted as reflecting Moscow’s adverse reactions to economic sanctions the Obama administration imposed on Russia as punishment for taking over Crimea and threatening   military involvement in Ukraine.

Japan and China are also dumping US Treasury holdings, and now Japan is in the lead followed by China.
See http://money.cnn.com/2017/01/19/investing/china-sells-us-debt-japan-russia/

Now in 2017, Russia is increasing investment in US Treasury, an upswing that started in May 2015.  Why is that?

19. Russia and China are buying gold. According to a report released by the OMFIF think tank in September, central banks are turning back to gold purchases following four decades of attempted demonetization.  Central banks have been net bullion buyers every year since the 2008 financial crisis, adding more than 2,800 tons or 9.4 percent to their reserves.  The past eight years has seen the longest protracted spell of gold accruals since 1950-65.
See  http://www.hangthebankers.com/russia-precious-metals-market-buys-tons-gold/

20. The Russian Central Bank has quietly been buying huge volumes of gold over the last 10 years. This diversification into gold accelerated since the financial crisis and since relations with the U.S. deteriorated in recent years. Russia bought gold systematically both when the ruble was strong and when it was weak.  In 2015, Russia added a record 208 tons of gold to her reserves compared with 172 tons for 2014.

21. According to the World Gold Council, only the central banks of the U.S., Germany, Italy, France and China currently hold larger gold reserves than Russia. The Central Bank of Russia has outpaced the People's Bank of China (PBOC) by nearly 150 tonnes in the last seven years, and has been the world’s largest central bank buyer of gold reserves for some time. This trend is expected to continue.  Total gold mining production globally is  around 3,200 metric tonnes per year.  Thus, Russia's purchase of 48 metric tonnes is around 1.5% of total annual global gold production. This is a very large amount for one country to buy in just one month.  Some of the gold bought will have come from Russian gold production which is currently at about 26 metric tonnes per month. In 2014, Russia was the third largest gold miner in the world at 266.2 tonnes, just six tonnes short of Australia in second place and China in first place.

22. In October 2016, the yuan - also known as the renminbi, or "people's money" - was added as a reserve currency by the International Monetary Fund. It joins the U.S. dollar, the euro, the yen and British pound in the IMF's special drawing rights (SDR) basket, which determines currencies that countries can receive as part of IMF loans. It marks the first time a new currency has been added since the euro was launched in 1999.

The bottom line

After WWII the USA had the largest proportion of gold and the strongest currency, so countries agreed to peg their currency values to it. But when USA society started overspending (Vietnam was expensive) and other economies (Japan and Germany especially) started producing more, the dollar value went down, so Nixon broke it’s tie to gold in 1971, making it a “fiat” currency instead of a commodity currency.  In 1973 the USA convinced Saudi Arabia to value it’s oil in US dollars and only sell the oil to everyone in our currency in exchange for military equipment and protection. Now the USA is using military power around the world to maintain our artificially high standard of living which is based on artificial valuation of our dollar that depends on controlling other countries’ use of our dollar to buy oil, and to keep oil going as the most important source of energy, and keeping the dollar going as the global reserve currency, and to keep increasing demand for dollars by increasing demand for oil and American goods, to feed our insatiably growing consumer economy.

We kill leaders of countries that threaten to abandon the US dollar as the currency for purchasing oil including Muammar al-Gaddafi of Libya (he had $7B worth of gold and a plan to create an African currency: the gold-backed dinar with which oil and everything else would be purchased) and Saddam Hussein (he moved from using the US dollar to the Euro for oil purchasing and he invaded Kuwait giving him 20% of global oil reserves so he was a threat to the value of the US dollar). We bribe the Saudis to keep their dollar assets (though in 2016 they threatened to sell $750B of US Treasuries and dollar assets if the US declassified 11 pages of the 9/11 report that implicated the royal family).

It used to be that whoever controls the Persian Gulf controls the value of the US dollar. Following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, Dick Cheney said : “Once Hussein acquired Kuwait ... he was clearly in a position to dictate the future of worldwide energy policy, and that gave him a stranglehold on our economy and on that of most of the other nations of the world as well.”

But governments are quickly abandoning the US dollar as they create alliances with countries that are accessing their own oil and gold supplies.

A shift by OPEC to the euro or yuan is rapidly confronting the US with an economic “nightmare scenario.” Major oil importers would need to transfer some of their funds from US dollars reserves—stocks, bonds and other assets—into euro or yuan reserves. This would see a sharp fall in the value of the dollar, possibly setting in motion a further withdrawal of funds as investors became nervous over the value of their dollar assets. Suddenly the burgeoning US debt, which at present plays little or no role in day-to-day financial calculations, would become a factor of considerable importance.

The Federal Reserve Bank and the dollar as the global currency is basically a Ponzi scheme that depends on constant increased demand for oil or dollars.

Because the U.S. currently controls nearly all mechanisms within the global financial system, they have embarked on policies which almost always begin with economic sanctions, and a freezing of assets for any nation it determines to be in opposition to the will of Washington,  and of U.S. foreign policy agendas.  And we still see this today in regards to nations like Russia and Iran, and in a more subtle way for most of the nations of Europe (through Fed swap lines).

The bottom line is that the U.S. has crossed the Rubicon one too many times by unilaterally inflicting economic warfare on any and all nations that do not cede to their will, and they have been able to do this through the petrodollar system originally created through a partnership with the House of Saud.  But as both Russia and China have shown over the past four years, the effects of sanctions can be mitigated through strong coalitions that are willing to participate outside dollar hegemony, and even turn the tables on the U.S. by offering the world an alternative to the current dollar based financial system.  And it appears that the Saudi's know this, and know that it is now possible to break away from Washington at any time.

We keep wondering why Trump wants to be good friends with Russia and now I see that we are no longer the power leaders with our dollars…. Russia and China are finding their own way forward without need of dollars or fear of our military force. They are big enough to stand up to us.

So, a note on my sources... I found most of this information in non-mainstream media, and I searched mainstream media for these stories, but found very few and those I did find were complexly written with financiers or economists as the audience. I can't stand by this research as absolutely true, but noticed multiple stories supporting the same information, and in general I feel that most of this is true.

I am understanding much more why so many non-western countries would hate the USA. We are no longer the helpers of the world, but the bullies that are trying to keep people dependent on our currency that we need to keep our wasteful spending going. It seems the US dollar is headed for collapse as the yuan and rouble gain momentum in the world as the international currencies.
